Early Life and Personal Background
Monique Kitamura developed a passion for surfing at a young age, drawn to challenging waves rather than being intimidated by them. She is part of the Bay Area surfing community and became a member of the Outer Bar Babes, a group of women big wave surfers who tackle Ocean Beach when waves reach 10–15 feet, alongside notable surfers like Rebecca Wunderlich, Sachi Cunningham, Bianca Valenti, and Anna Wankel. She has faced significant challenges, including six dislocated shoulders, yet continues to pursue bigger waves while balancing motherhood and a demanding career.
Monique is married to Jon, with their relationship beginning in South Africa and culminating in a wedding in Kauai, Hawaii, in 2008.
Currently, they live in Northern California, with their daughters, Mia and Indi.
Surfing Career
Monique is recognized for her fearless approach to big wave surfing. She has been a prominent figure in the Bay Area surfing scene and has inspired other women to pursue big wave surfing. Beyond her personal achievements, she actively contributes to the community by coaching young surfers at the HMB Kids Surf Club, emphasizing confidence, practice, and passion.
Television and Media
Monique Kitamura is the host of Surf ‘n Gourmet, an internationally aired adventure reality TV show. In the series, she travels to the best surf spots around the world, interviews professional surfers, and highlights local cuisine near surf breaks, blending her love for surfing and culinary exploration. Her media presence showcases her adventurous lifestyle and promotes surfing culture globally.
Coaching and Mentorship
In addition to her professional surfing and television work, Monique dedicates time to coaching young surfers, fostering confidence and skill development. Her mentorship has been praised for its impact on the next generation of surfers, helping them gain both technical ability and self-assurance in the water.
Surf n' Gourmet
Surf n’ Gourmet is a thrilling television series that combines the excitement of the sport of surfing, the art of gourmet food and the exploration of new cultures. Think Anthony Bourdain/Padma Lakshmi with a surfboard.
The series is similar in style and quality to “No Reservations”, “100 Foot Wave”, “Taste the Nation” and Gordon Ramsey’s “Unchartered”.
